Zoom Burst

Excuse my innocence but can someone explain to me what it is and how it works.

I've seen some images using this effect and would like to give it a try, so any help is much appreciated.

as I understand it, you compose your picture, and whilst the shutter is open, you zoom the lens - never tried it

I tried it, didn't work, might need a longer shutter speed!! doh!!

This is zoom burst. set the shutter speed low and zoom, focus whilst fully zoomed out and steadily but smartly zoom in once the shutter is open. This was a 1 second exposure.

Thanks guys so just to clarifier low shutter speed and after pressing shutter release zoom in.

Do you need any specific metering? Spot, Centre weighted etc

Is any lens suited to this or is a certain zoom range better?

Cheers Mike

I used centred wighted for the shot I put here. as that is the focal point. I was on manual so pushed the metering to get the delay I wanted, you can also ramp the the F-stop up to get longer delay, increased graininess of course. I haven't tried zooming out, though that would be an interesting experiment. As for lens, I think the answer to that is experiment. The rule I always apply in whatever I do is, 'what works'. Especially when I am experimenting.

Cheers Mr Photochop, I'll give it a go and let you know how i get on. PDT_Aliboronz_15

i just use whatever metering i have at the time, usually matrix tbh. it's difficult to get a smooth zoom, so it's worth taking a few at the same time and choosing the one with the best results.

here are some examples:

this one's a little different - i used my 70-200, loosened the tripod mounting collar on the lens and span the camera round as i zoomed

Nicely done JonH, I particularly like the arched doorway shot.

Briliant, will have to try some of these.

wow john, great stuff, really like the Arch and the second of the forest shots.
looks to me as if subject matter can also make a big difference to the image as well.
