I think I must be missing something here. In what way is this a near miss? I'd have been ecstatic with this. It's a great shot.

Thanks for your comment - dont' get me wrong I am pleased with it but I would have been far happier with the the bee in focus and wings visible which would have made it a far better shot (probably being too critical of myself).
Just for info - I had just purchased a 1.4 teleconverter and had it on my 70-300 zoom (at long end), hand holding when bee came along, no time to adjust settings.
