Sunset blossom.I'm not sure if I love it or hate this one. There's something about it, but then....
And still chasing Daffs.

hmmm, gonna go away and come back,
first one, not too sure if there's too much in the bcakground, by that should have been more of the lighter element, its not quite a silohuette, and I don't think it should be, can't quite put my finger on it, maybe its that splodge of red at the back.
Nice daff

Thanks Dave, I may just put it down to, 'it seemed like a good idea at the time', but I think there's something to be had from trying it again. It has potential methinks.

One thing I see that is interesting in the first image, is that the significant parts of the flower (in silhouette) are coincidentally placed over brighter areas in the background. Almost as if it was intentionally framed by this.

Remember I mentioned I was going to try to pay more attention to the negative space...? Well I was trying to here.

Couldn't have put it better myself, and thanks for commenting. I've been experimenting some more tonight, just doing things. I have a passionate dislike of flash, in the general sense, but went out in the garden to experiment tonight. And had a play with the evening light and combining images.

re: your second effort...
think it needs the background...
not enough in the shot to get away with a black background, in my opinion...
why are flowers so bloody hard to take pictures of!?

the more i look at it the more i like your first pic..
still dunno why!
still something not right, but seem to have got past that and an now really liking it...
it as a nice "mood" if that makes any sense!!!

Now had another look, and its one of those that grows on me,

i really really like the first pic! what aperture did you shoot it at? if the background was just a touch more blurred i reckon you would have had fewer complaints

Good point, f-10, reasoning, and correct me if I'm wrong here, that a lower f number would have probably given me a silhouette and I wanted to try for some definition in the blossom. I wish now I had tried various settings, but being a numpty, didn't.

no a lower f number would have only given you different exposure if you hadn't changed either the shutter speed or the iso.
a balanced exposure should give you roughly the same lighting irrespective of aperture setting - all that should change is the depth of field

Thanks for that Jon, I'll let that percolate into my little brain.

If you open the aperture by 1 stop (i.e. letting 1 stop's-worth more light in) then increase the shutter speed by 1 stop (i.e. letting 1 stop's-worth less light in) you're letting the exact same amount of light in, but you're changing the appearance of the image - depth of field, and how much action is frozen

Which just goes to show that despite the recent thread on aperture, shutter speed and ISO, I am still getting to grips with all this. Thanks again Jon.

And just one more for this thread, because I keep coming back to this one. What do you think?
