some wedding shots from the weekend

Cripes what a nightmare with exposure! Can't say I've really done anything like that before, but you live and learn I guess Smile

My main target of the day was a few atmos shots, as the pro there was obviously going to get the bread and butter stuff, plus it meant I was out of his way so he didn't get in too much of a huff with someone wandering around with pro kit Smile

I've still got more shots to add when I get time, but here's what's up so far - would very much appreciate c&c from those that have been there and done that, can't believe how many highlights I blew Confused

I think you've done well John, looking at the shots there was a lot of differing lighting conditions to deal with which I suppose is a side affect of this time of year (sun low in sky) and lots of shade from the trees.
Looking at the white dresses the WB looks good. Did you use flash for any of the shots?

Thanks for taking a look Mike, the light was a bit awkward on Sat and in hindsight I think I should have shot raw. Exposure is _still_ my biggest headache but I'm determined to get it nailed eventually

Sadly I'm still short of flash equipment for my D2Xs, so the outdoor shots are all natural light. I used my D70+onboard later on, but they're far from spectacular, and ended up shooting natural light indoors too!

The original plan was to buy one before the wedding, but I wouldn't have had much chance to learn how to use it properly and I recently splashed out on a new mountain bike (not a cheap one either) so I'm a bit broke at the moment!!

Long term I want to learn to use flash, and I want to learn more about 'people' shots. I'm warming towards the idea of portraits etc and have a couple of books on my wishlist on amazon. It's been fascinating watching people experiment with studio shots on here Smile

hmm Portraits is the way I'm going (always liked it) and looking at getting some lights and the Canon 135mm F2L USM lens to go with them. (just got to talk the wife into it) Very Happy

Got a wedding about this time next year so got the wife and kids standing in front and inside the church this weekend just as some trial shots to see how it goes lighting wise etc, know it's a good way off yet but gets me some practise with the flash.

i think you did a good job mate...some lovely shots there....

if you have any in the set that are slightly over exposed..have a play with turning them black and white....normally saves a couple!!!!

nice one...

Having had a chance to look through them, I think you've done an amazing job Jon. I can see what you mean about the blown ones, but give yourself a break mate. You weren't using flash and under the circumstances, getting the white right on all of them was never going to be easy. The ones where gran is having a cig has got to be one hell of a challenging situation for exposure. Really well done Jon.

Have now browsed the lot, and I think you may be doing yourself a liitle bit of an injustice, but I think we are all looking at our own images with a much more critical eye now.

The images should go down well with the family, which is probably the more important issue, if they were CRXP then you would be in trouble, but they are very far removed from that description.

Would agree that getting the WB right in the circumstances would have been very challenging.

thanks for taking a look through them and taking the time to comment guys, it's much appreciated.

i am my own harshest critic, but i don't get myself down on it Smile

i didn't expect the light parts of the clothing to make such a difference on matrix, so it was a very valuable lesson, and again, a good example of why you should expose for the highlights with digital!

i'm going to break out my exposure book again and do some revision
