Shoot with Leah, Mirz and Ami.

We had a great time. We have another shoot next Tuesday with a foursome. I had to work on some of these to extend the backdrop where they didn't quite get in. It's 6 foot wide so we'll have to wait and see how it goes next week. I got 350 shots, the lighting isn't perfect by any means, but I'm pretty happy with most of what I got. I definitely need another light on the backdrop. See what you think. Have I ever mentioned how pleasant it is to have several beautiful women hanging around having their picture taken? It's nice.

It also nice that they want their pictures taken, they look comfortable, and very nice too.

Not too sure about the cut off feet in the "full" length shot - No 5, or the shadows on the floor in the top one.

Think the third and the last stand out for me.

Nice set of images

Have to say they all look very comfortable in front of the camera, I especially like the pose from the young lady on the right 2nd picture, shes very natural and looking down shes got great expression and attitude. Your indeed a lucky man Very Happy

Cheers Mike, it's great to have another shoot so soon after the last because it allows me to try out some different ideas while they're fresh. Lighting the background remains a problem as you can see. I need two lights out front for three or four people, which leaves me with one for the background, but I do have a clip on flash unit which today I have rigged up and managed to work out how to shield it so that it wont affect the camera. So two front two back, a bit more test driving over the weekend and I want to try different camera settings, and hopefully see some improvements next week.

The lady on the right you mentioned, Mirz, oozes confidence and is a ball of energy, so she's great to work with.

I do need to do a course in studio work, money's the problem at the moment, I could wish some of us lived closer to gether to share shoots and pool ideas.

They commented at the time that some of the pictures looked like band pictures, so I did a couple of workovers with that in mind and they are delighted with them.

Yesterdays studio shoot was the first time I have felt in control of the studio, I played with the set over the week and did a series of test shots on the day, and felt comfortable and confident in what I was after. Finally settled on Main light with soft box full power, Fill light with shoot through umbrella on 1/4 power with two lights on the backdrop.

I had to do minimal work on the pictures, the first is the original, on the second I've added a touch of lightness and contrast and a makeover. I am a very happy bunny.

And a very nice job you've done to my friend.

Keith,
Is it possible to post a picture of your set-up IE lighting location in relation to subject as this is the part that I'm personally unsure off.
I know this may vary each time but it will give me some idea of where to start.

Cheers Mike

With absolute pleasure mate. Bear in mind that this is far from gospel, it's my working towards getting it something like right. I don't use the back lights when I am shooting with the black background and I haven't used the black since realising all my camera setting were wrong. So this is just for the white background so far.

This is the floor plan, the main and fill lights are off to the side and higher than the models, creating highlights in the eyes at approx 11 and 1 o'clock.

This is the shooting area but showing all the lights. The barn doors backlight is off to the left and the other backlight is hidden behind my reflector.

This is taken from the side showing the light behind the reflector, barn door light just in the front and the two main lights at the right and back

.

I now have a line marked on the floor for the optimum position (blue in the plan) but moving the lights is critical if they squat down or kneel. With three or four people I have to bring the lights in from time to time so that they don't cast shadows on each other, and sometimes to avoid harsh shadows from hair fringes.

Perfect many thanks mate thats a big help q43

Keith,

What would you say is the minimum number of lights needed and also what power?
creators

Cor mate.... you're asking... For one person you could use one background light (assuming a white background), one main light and a reflector. Main light on full power, for me that is a Falcon Eyes 150W. If you're on a dark background, just the main light and reflector.

This is what I'd use for a single model using a white background. Hope that helps.

Theres so much out there and I'm a bit unsure of what I need to start off with.

Thanks Shayna, you don't have to be in a band to have band pictures.  Laughing
