Renault World Series, Donnington ParkMy first attempt at motorsport photography and I was stuck at 200mm as my maximum focal length. I was well practised in panning before the day thanks to all my horseracing stuff but it was still quite a challenge thanks to the unulating lines of the circuit.
It's been a very long time since I've been to DP and it was nice to be back after so long, although I think I'd still rather watch the F1 on telly :]

As I posted on flickr great set of images, that D2 must be getting hammered now!

Great work John that panning experience certainly makes the difference with cars, gives that great sense of speed. Good to see your still shooting HDR.

Yeah thanks for the early visit D ;) As far as the hammer goes, I'd got round the clock before the racing had even finished currently looking at something like 13000 shots since getting the camera in January

Thanks Mike, no danger in me giving that malarkey up any time soon Still have lots of fun with my HDR when the opportunity arises

Glad you like 'em adam, but sadly the terms of entry forbid me to do anything with them - I could give them away without issue but money's a no-no

Wow, panning down to a fine art, even though they go a lot faster than horses, great set of shots.

fantastic shots i ever saw any!!!!!
Love the capture of the last shot too (even if i'm not a fan of the car) - the bronze colour really stands out against the dark sky!

Yeah, wow, I am also very impressed by your panning technique! Perfection!

Great shots, especially numbers 2, 3 and 5. Love the red hot glow on the brakes on number 3.

thanks very much for taking a look and commenting all, much appreciated
I did find the panning much harder than I'd expected, as I seem to be able to pan at will at 1/80 with the geegees.. I can only guess that although the cars are moving a lot quicker, they're much further away so I suppose weren't flying by quite as quickly.

Couldn't have said it better - nicely done Jon.

what lens were you using? As i guess that have been cropped especially as i know where you took the image with its brake disks glowing.
Im really liking the last pic though, stick a grey or purple grad on it and it will look especially moody. Looking it over again, try a dark blue
Another panner... and very nice pans they are too.

Thanks Evo & Richard
All the action shots were taken with my 70-200 f/2.8 VR. (static shots taken with a mix of tokina 12-24 f/4 and nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 ) Sometimes I had the VR in single plane mode, sometimes I had it switched off altogether. I couldn't decide whether the VR was helping or hindering when I was doing the angled stuff - I've not rotated any of the shots in PP, they were all shot that way by design
The 70-200 gave me enough reach at the inside of redgate, craner and the approach to mcleans even with hsc off. After noticing how rapidly I was filling my first 2gb card, I had hsc on more often than not purely to save me using all my cards up before the day was done! Switched hsc off for fogarty as I wanted to be more zoomed in to get maximum blurry backgrounds
(hsc = high speed crop)
