If you lassoed Paula, feathered and then upped the brightness in the levels palette I reckon you'd bring her out more which seems to be the problem. I had a quick go with the image you put here and I reckon it'll stand it ok.

thats to try and get her out of the shadow she is sitting in? you think thats the issue with this?
