My neice came visiting this weekend, so managed to persuade her to sit for me. Although it can't be seen in this shot, the background is still getting a lilac tint, even though I have now put white lining paper over all the walls - its doing my head in - rant over - here's one of the images I took

How did the shoot go, in terms of working with a new model, her being shy, etc?
The critique I might offer is about her hands... firstly, I'm not quite sure what she is doing with them, they seem a bit incongruent... second, they are cut in half. I think hands should be all in, or all out. But the rest of the image is lovely. She looks relaxed and like she is having fun!

Lovely shot Dave, though I agree with Blue about the hands.
Assuming you are taking the shots on the flash setting have you tried altering the tolerance up or down a degree or so? I still haven't got my settings right and am rather envious that Blue has taken to studio work like a duck to water, whereas I feel like a bumbly.

Totally agree about the hands - she was really nervy, she didn't really relax, and wasn't too happy with the flash, had them on 1/4 power.
Thought about cropping so hands were not in shot, but couldn't get a crop I liked. Hmmm, might try a real tight crop though.
She's coming back in a couple of months with her ball gown, she (well her mum, my sister) wants a few studio shots with her dressed up to the nines.

Not sure about the processing on the second. It's a lovely picture of your neice, but to me- please don't take this the wrong way-- the processing looks like something from the 70's or 80's. Which, actually, isn't bad, if that's what you happen to like. But that is my first thought when I see it.
What was your lighting set-up for these? It is really nice.

Blue - no worries, the dated look was in actual fact what was wanted in this case - locally to me, is a professional photographer who has this style in his shop window (weddings) and seems to be popular, am playing around with other methods at the moment.
Lighting - 2 flashes (strobes), one with a softbox, other with umbrella (diffuser) and one slave - this was above and behind her head. My portaflash units only have 4 settings - 1/4, 1/2, full power and off, had them on 1/4 for these shots.
