Microsoft ripping off images from flickr for a competitionBelieve it or not there are 5 of mine, even though my privacy settings are set to no one but me to do anything with them.Intersting - the competition is called iconic britain, but one of mine is taken in the Algarve, another in Tuscany..... Got the following from the welshflickrcymru group on flickr ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Microsoft are running a photo competition entitled Iconic Britain sponsored by Nikon. You can vote on a pre-selected image or use LiveSearch to find an image and submit it. The images Live Search pulls up give no reference to the original image/webpage/creator. We can only assume Microsoft have stolen these and are hosting them on their own servers. Microsoft also state that it is the responsibility of those entering the competition to ensure the images are not subject to copyright. WHEN MICROSOFT DO NOT TELL YOU WHERE THE IMAGES HAVE COME FROM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I urge you to type your flickr name into the searchbox, www.iconicbritain.co.uk and see if you can find any of your own copyrighted images. I found a couple of mine! and they are signed!!!! ok - so the photos are not in the competition and the real wrangle is about the stripping of metadata in the livesearch bit.
Surely all that is required is for MS to agree to include the metadata when the photos come up on the livesearch and everyone can be happy - that way if one of your pics is chosen as an iconic image then you can be informed (and of course there should be a prize!) Search some of the big names and they will appear too - David Bailey is there... wonder what he thinks about it. |

Microsoft Corporation Statement
We are grateful to Pro-Imaging for raising its concerns about the use of photographers' works on the Iconic Britain website. Although this was only a short marketing programme, it’s always very important to Microsoft that we respect the intellectual property rights of others. We apologise that we have not lived up to our ordinarily high standards. We have since taken steps to obtain the rights to use every image to be featured in the subsequent stages of the Iconic Britain competition. We also welcome the invitation by Pro-Imaging to discuss with them best practices when using photographs in similar competitions. Microsoft Corporation Statement From Nikon Today, 31st July 2008 the following statement was issued by Nikon; STATEMENT: Nikon would like to confirm that it has withdrawn its support from Microsoft’s Iconic Britain competition. This is due to the feedback and concerns raised by photographers and entrants surrounding the competition mechanic that was developed and promoted by Microsoft. Nikon will fulfil its prize commitment to the winners, however it will not be associated with the competition going forward We appreciate your feedback, understanding and continued support. |
