So little outing as I wanted to see how the High iso worked out
this is
ISO 3200
f5.6
1/80
not a great image but it shows up what I wanted to know - a little noise reduction in CS3 was done

Fantastic, I hope you'll be very happy together and that's an impressive shot noise wise, I can't see any noise at all at this resolution. Is it as impressive full sized? And I rather like the shot in its own right.

thanks, its every bit as impressive full size.
First impression is also that the images also look better. The LCD screen on the back is brilliant, so sharp that I can now see if something is in focus, still playing, live view looks interesting for macro work.
Fie sizes are smaller than the d200 as it uses lossless compression on RAW files so they are about 4MB smaller.

It's supposedly 2 full stops better than the D2Xs and i've been quite happy with a lot of my iso1250 shots, so iso3200 on the D300 should be fine (as it seems it is :D )
The best way to keep noise down is to nail the exposure and white balance - something that the latest batch of nikons (D3, D300, D700) reportedly do exceptionally well
I'm sure you'll have a _lot_ of fun with the D300, it's a massive step forward from the D200 in terms of technology and if you ignore the battery, hsc mode and weather proofing is a better camera than the D2Xs for a fraction of the money
