Have to thank Jon for pointing me in a direction on this image which suffers from haze.
Using a curves adjustment layer
selected red channel
brought both sides of the diagonal in so as to meet the ends of the colour range, small s curve added
then did same on the green and blue channels
sharpened
and got this result

different technique, pretty similar result tho i reckon - i will replicate the stuff from my 'lab' book just as soon as i find which box it's packed in
