Flattering Portraits

Flattering Portraits
Most people don’t like having their picture taken – and you can understand why given some of the results!
Naturally, the right location, perfect lighting and flawless composition are all crucial in good portraiture, but if you want to make your subject look good, you need to pick the right lens.
A lens with a focal length of between 80mm and 120mm is just about perfect. This will compress perspective to flatten facial features slightly, while the mild telephoto effect will clearly differentiate between subject and background.
Use a wide aperture of f/5.6 to accentuate this. Your standard zoom should be fine, but portraits are also a handy extra use for macro lenses.
