The colour out of the D2Xs is to die for, it's a truly wonderful tool that is never ever anything short of a joy to use.

That said, all the colour pics above had a very minor adjustment of the yellow channel and a very small boost in saturation. I do tend to tweak a lot of my shots, but its typically a very minor affair

The final pic had a little more tweaking, but it was shot at iso1600. As per usual with my high iso stuff I'd dialled in +0.3ev exposure compensation to try and minimise noise, but at that sort of iso setting the colour is always a lot colder and flatter. This required a boost in the yellows and a nudge in the red, plus a more significant saturation boost. (probably cooked the satuation tbh) plus ofc a little tickle from noise ninja, although I always really step back the settings in noise ninja to retain as much detail as possible.

Photos 3 & 8 were 2 of the 3 submitted to the h&h, I'll find out later today if I was successful, but it'll be a toughie - there were two pros there on Saturday, both who are regular contributors to the same magazine.

It must have been hard choosing which ones to submit.  I like your choices... but I would have thought #7 would be a contender, too.  What made you choose #3 over #7?  Was it at a more important stage of the race?

Do you recommend noise ninja?  I have toyed with the idea of getting it... but so far I generally just use photoshop's noise reduction at the lowest possible settings.  It works ok.  Not sure if noise ninja is enough of an improvement to warrant paying for it... plus it seemed a little trickier to use.  Do you feel that it is better than photoshop?  (this question can go out to anyone who has tried both)

You increase your chance of publication significantly if the eventual race winner is in the shot, although it's not mandatory. Unfortunately for me, the winner is nowhere in sight in #7. I'm still learning the ropes with submission, it could have been the case that they would have used #7 if i'd sent it in, but the maiden races are the second-lowest important race of the day and the winner of that race won so impressively that I reckoned that they would have wanted it to at least be visible in the shot. I could be completely wrong of course, second-guessing their editorial staff is a funny old game!!

This is the only decent image I got of the winner of that race (romping home towards the final fence)



Noise Ninja has been updated a lot since I stumped up for it, so I can't comment on the current edition, and I haven't used Adobe's own noise reduction features so can't comment on that either Smile

I also have a copy of Noiseware Professional, but find that far more fiddly than Noise Ninja so don't use it very often.

The version of Noise Ninja I use has been worth every penny I spent on it though. I'm trying my level best to minimise noise at the point of capture (trying to either nail exposure or slightly over-expose the image rather than under expose) but there's only so much you can do at iso1600 Smile

All I do when using NN is to load up the plugin, click on 'profile image' let it work out what to do then apply it. I have the settings turned down as default (something like '4/10' for luminance and '2/10' for colours) and disable unsharp masking as you're supposed to do the noise reduction first and the sharpening at the very last point, so seems daft getting it to sharpen straight away

It's been fairly easy to configure for the D2Xs as the noise is almost entirely in luminance, not colour, but the final settings do need tailoring to your camera to get the best results. You can download profiles from the creators of NN, but I didn't like the D2Xs ones (D70 ones were good tho)

I've never hear of noise ninja.  I always thought it was a random and funny signature.  Shows I have a long way to go on this learning curve  Embarassed

I love the first one - its a great photo. My next favourite is the first B&W one except for the photographer in the background ( damn photographers! Rolling Eyes )

It's nice to see something different on the sports front and horse racing shots  make a welcome change.

thanks for all the comments ladies and gents, it's much appreciated. i'm glad you appreciate the pics, it's a sport i've come to love over the years, although i'm sure some of that is down to the friends i've made whilst i'm there ;)
