Digital P&S recommendationsMy wife's digtal P&S is acting up. It has nothing to do with the fact that I dropped it on a hardwood floor from a height of 5 feet.
Anyway, I am looking for recommendations. I need 6 + MP and image stabilization. I'm sure there are plenty. If I get a few candidates, I can do some research for comparison. I'm still waiting for the prices to fall on the D40 so I can make the leap. Although, for the same price I can get a D70 or a D50. Anybody had an opportunity to compare those? |

I have a D70, awesome. amazing camera that I would recomend to anyone. creators also has one, though he doesn't use it anymore, not sure if anyone has the D50. If there is anything you want to know about the d70 ask away... | ||||

In all seriousness... Nikon (an others) place the D40 as an "entry level consumer dslr". Where does the D70 fit? Is it consider a "pro-sumer" camera? I assume it was superceded by the D80 (which a friend of mine just ordered). So, given a choice of a D40, a D50, or a D70... you would go with the D70? Even if it is "old technology"? I work with computers every day all day long. Old technology is an evil phrase. However, if it does the job... |

Yes I would, simply because I know that the D70 has everything that I require, although having said that I don't know much at all about the others. It is old technology, and the D80 has superseded it, but it is still an amazing camera. Like I said above, creators had the d70 and now has the d80, so ask him bout those two, but if you want some reading, this guy is the danglers.
Ken Rockwell Thats his search page, he has done reviews on the D40(  ,50,70(s),80 etc, so search away and read to your hearts content. is there anything else?

I've been to his site. Very interesting stuff. I know that I will be kept to a $500 - $550 range for a digital SLR. Just comparing my options.
I still need to replace my wife's "limping along" P&S first. |

Have you any make or model in mind for the p&s?
The only problem is not many P&S have IS and the ones that do tend not to be cheap. Have you a budget in mind? is a bridge camera more than she needs? |

She wants SIMPLE and something that fits in her purse. Also, it needs RCA ports so she can plug into the TV. Current one doesn't do that. She doesn't care for IS. I downloaded her last bunch of pictures. She needs IS. I was at a local dept store yesterday. I can get IS on a P&S for $250. However, it was a Fuji or a Panasonic. i can't remember. Maybe be fine for her, I don't know. I was hoping on sticking with a "known" brand.

Theres the Canon A570 IS (new model) Here
Not sure how this converts to US $ or theres the A710 IS older model see here cost is around the £160 mark. both come highly recommended in reviews. Just a couple of ideas for you. |

Thanks. I think I am just going to have to drag her to the store and see what trips her trigger. I can look at the technical specs, but she has to feel good about using it. | ||||

Canon Ixus.
Or a Panasonic Lumix. My course tutor raves about both of these....as does my brother with a ixus and a work colleague (he has a D200) with the Lumix. |

I understand this thread is kinda old now, but i was wondering if you have tried the Canon SD800 IS. I have it, and it has 7.1Mp, IS and a whole ton of other features.... I love this camera......... |

Thanks for the input. No purchase yet. She has decided that since I have a new D40, I should also be taking the "family gathering" pictures, too. Arghhhh....

I have a SD700IS which is great it goes everywhere with me, just in case I see that off shot and don't have the 5D with me. The wife uses it and we had a picture enlarged to A3 with no trouble at all. Never tried the 800 but if it's like my 700 it's a good camera. See Here for the SD800IS review Mike |

This may be a day late and a dollar short.. But I have a Canon SD630
It's a 6mp and has the HUGE display screen.. It's easy to use has tons of features and i can stick it in my back pocket if need be. |

To be honest, I am a little reluctant to buy a new P&S for the wife. At the last family get together I saw her give her camera to a 6 year old and let him go and take pictures. A lot of deleting later. Anyway, I would get an ulcer if I spent 3 or 4 hundred dolars on a nice camera and saw grandma hand it over to the kiddies and let them disappear from site. Maybe if I could get her to sign an agreement to only let the kids "play" with the old one... | ||||

Firstly hello and welcome, and I think the type of camera you buy depends on what you want to do with it and your future plans. Not everyone whats the hassle of carrying a DSLR around with 2 or 3 lenses so a compact is ideal. They are also more discreet if your taking street photography or at a function where alot of people shy away from the camera. I have a compact which I carry on me at all times and find it very useful and alot easier than carrying my DSLR around but it doesn't allow me the creative side that the SLR does. |
