Day out in Wells Next the Sea

Here's a few shots from Sunday's day trip to Wells Next the Sea.

lovely place to visit and I am sure you had some fun and a great time.

Comments re the images

#1 - like it, but think the exposure of the windmill could be better, did you shoot in RAW? If you did it would be easier to bring out the sky and some detail in the windmill - can be done with jpg's but it's not quite as easy.

#2 and 3 - unfortunately do nothing for me except that they are nice momentoes for the day out and there is nothing wrong with that.
#2 - tender - would have loved to see all of it included, and I would also have liked to see the full mast on the yacht 9which is sometimes difficult due to location of where you have to stand and restriction of available lenses.

#4 - first thing that is noticeable is the horizon, it's not straight. I do like the composition though with the line of boats leading from one side to the other, but again I feel that the exposure could be improved. The sky detail is great.

#5 - beach huts, I like that fact that you have captured the multi coloured hut but feel compositionally it could be improved. The steps up to it have been cut off and the partial huts are not adding anything for me - it also does nott look sharp (but that could be the compression). Not sure, but have you tries a b&w conversion and colour pop the multi coloured hut?

Sorry I could not be more positive, but like I said these are my opinions, and again they are good memories for a day out.

Hope you do not mind but had a quick play with the boat one ( if you do let me know and I will remove it)



It was simply an adjustment to the exposure, a little boast to the colours, curves for a bit of contrast and a little sharpening, along with straightening the horizon.

I tried the windmill but could not get any detail back in the brickwork although I could see it.

I'm liking 1,2,3 and 4 but not 5, I don't find it appeals to me.
I agree with the comments made about the horizon on 4, it does look better on the level.
2 would have been better if you'd got the whole mast in and left the foreground boat out in my opinion.

I pretty much agree with the comments so far, except to suggest, keep going on the beach huts, I can see the potential in the one here, it's just not there yet. I wish I could share being there with you, not because I could do any better, but to look at them and discuss what's there and have an opportunity to work the scene, because there is an absolute belter waiting to happen.

But the shot I really want to comment on is No 1, I think compositionally you missed by the merest fraction on the right edge, but the shot really does something for me, I think with a bit more post production it could be exceptional, but even as it is it excites me and definitely grabbed my interest. The complex geometrics are complimented by the tonal quality.

forgot to add that you can use adobe Raw converter on JPG's, just open bridge, select the image and choose open with camera raw from the file drop down menu

Is an option on mine (month's free trial of CS3 extended) and an instant improvement for some of my ropey jpgs taken on the fuji!  Very Happy  Shocked  Cool Orc (my 5 year old wants me to put some emoticons in!) Laughing  Smilie_PDT  wav

Its an option on the drop down so you should be able to do it.

open with camera raw is greyed out on your menu - daft question but did you select an image first?

Sad  oh dear.  I'm afraid i am no good with photoshop. I did try for an hour last night but only succeeded in producing pictures that don't look real. And i don't shoot in RAW as my PC can't open them. But I think I have a Canon disc that has a program for RAW on so I will search it out.

I think I got carried away with taking photos without checking my settings and must have taken about 50 photos within an hour of birds, beach huts and windsurfers all on the same setting. I can only blame the Valium Very Happy (Bad back)

I will try and amend my ways!  Very Happy
Hil26 - please do leave the adjusted photo there, I don't mind at all.

Your PC can't open them? Are you a Canon user? If so, goto here and download the CODEC for windblows. Also, grab the update for your Canon software Smile

CS2 doesn't support all cameras (don't know what you're using).

You can download a patch for some models, but others (like the Canon 40D) you're need to get CS3 (don't know if the trial one will work)

The first one is well on the way, try cropping the grockles off tight to the first beach hut, it suddenly takes on a whole new lease of life.

They're great, especially when the hunting season is on, we get the flat bed, spotlight and shotguns out and have ourselves a field day, then it's all down the pub for a jar of screech.

Thank you for that. i've downloaded the raw codec and updated zoom browser and my PC can now open RAW files. I still can't open them in Photoshop CS2 though - should I be able to? It just says they are not the correct type of document.


Giving it a rest for tonight as I've been messing about with RAW all night!

Which camera do you have?

The latest version of camera Raw is 4.5.

BUT

Note that the 4.x versions of the Camera Raw Plug-in are only compatible with Photoshop CS3

I'm using CS2. I suppose there's only RAW updates available for the latest version on Adobe site then.  My camera is a 350D.
