I have bought a laptop running windows Vista so that I can operate my camera remotely and instantly see each picture. I bought a Belkin data transfer cable so that I could transfer files between my XP computer and Vista computer and vice versa. The software that came with the cable allows me to transfer data from my XP machine to the Vista machine, but not the other way round. I phoned Belkin and they said they don't do any software to enable me to transfer from the Vista machine to the XP one, they actually had the incredible gall to laugh at the idea and said to try Google to see if any such software is available. (I am not going to rant) (I am not going to rant)
I couldn't find anything that will allow me to do this, does anyone know of any software available that will?
[Rant] What kind of cretinous, arrogant, dick brained, moron would design a data transfer cable that does not allow two way communication? (Ok, I lied about the rant)[/rant|]

I have written to Belkin (below) and await their reply.
The cable provides one way communication only, from my XP machine to my Vista machine. I called technical support and was informed that Belkin have no software available to enable me to transfer data from my Vista Laptop to my XP PC. Did it never occur to the designers or anyone that some of us upgrade slowly and might need to communicate Vista to XP? When I asked if Tech Support knew of any software that would allow me to use the cable to transfer data from Vista to XP I was advised to try Google. Amazing!

How are you connecting to the net at the moment? Best way to interconnect two pcs is via a network
creators
Hi Jon, I connect via a cable modem, router, network card and all that. I tried connecting the two computers via the router and it steadfastly refuses to allow two computers to connect at the same time. I tried connecting the two computers via the cable and creating a local area network, and I couldn't seem to do it. I understand nothing about this stuff, so am all at sea. Any help or advice or even a walkthrough would be deeply appreciated.

ok. does your router have more than 1 network port on it? i'm assuming it's not a wireless one but please confirm either way

I have just been out and bought a Netgear Wireless router. both computers are now connected to the internet through the router, the PC via cable connection and the laptop via wireless. What I don't know how to do is get them to talk to each other, nor how secure they are.
jonH
1) your wireless pc needs a firewall otherwise it's open to hackage from snoopers - windows firewall should be enough. mine uses macafee personal firewall or something - came installed on the laptop and is one of the few things from the macaffee security centre trial that carried on working after the 90 day trial had run out
2) make sure your wireless network is encrypted and does not share its code thingy. also set up mac filtering on the router and enter the wireless adaptor's mac code from the laptop as an approved device.
2) Set up a shared directory on one of the computers. you may need to go through a config wizard to allow file sharing
3) check you can see the directory from the other pc, then check permissions so you can write to that directory

It's all belly up this end, I've only just got this computer back online through the router, the laptop is out at the moment. (added later) All back online, but I cannot set up the file sharing, I now have several file sharing accounts and don't know how to get rid of them, because none of them work. This is all about as impenetrable as the first time I tried to build a web page and use FTP.
jonH
create a folder, right click, select properties.
select the sharing tab - there'll be a sharing and security checkbox. (windows xp sp2)

Yep, done that...

Interesting me thinks, your the third person i know with vista, and also the third person i know that has had problems with it, soon as this pc get towards the end of its life i'm buying a mac and be done with the shite crappy world that is microsoft, bunch of tossers!!! sorry i'll get my coat----->>

Just to clarify, I am not having a problem with Vista, it is quite an impressive platform, I am having a problem with networking. If I have a complaint it is that networking is not at all straight forward, that may or may not be a windows problem, I have no idea if I would not have exactly the same problem on a Mac. My biggest problem is my own ignorance about networking, that is no ones fault, least of all my own, doing something about it, however, is my responsibility and no one elses.

still don't like microsoft, but if you want to talk to someone, as Gabriel, he's a bit of a knowall when it comes to all that. i've got his number if you need.

All corporate and Gates stuff aside, I have enjoyed personal computing since Windows 3.1 and my first 286 computer. Where it is today is, quite simply, mind boggling. Like, wow man, who'd have thought it!? And it's great, I can do stuff on here that I never even dreamed of! We have a choice today, enjoy it, don't get wound up about it. Relax and enjoy it.

Jon, thanks for your help and patience, it's now sorted, I've been on the phone to my nephew and he's talked me through it. I had about as much chance as a snowball in hell of doing all that and the Windows help files were entirely useless.
