Backing up pictures?

Well i have a fair few pictures on my pc now and want to back them up properly, I did the other month, about 2 dvd's worth, but ive added new since then, but how do i go about backing up the ones that ive just added rather than backing them all up again? any ideas? Im fairly good on a pc (well i think i am) so any ideas would be great.

Also how do you back up your pics?


Also was looking at getting a flickr account, but i need a yahoo address, which i dont really wanna have to go through, so are there any other picture sharing sites i can use that allow hotmail accounts?

If you have Vista, you can use the Back Up and Restore option and select Incremental back up. mine's scheduled to back up to an external hard drive sunday nights. no problems so far although i haven't tried to restore any yet!

hi, I dont have vista so guess that not an option.

I basically want a back up that is not on computer.

timely question.........

my PC crashed last night when i was backing up my photo's from this year.......

Problem is i'm not sure how much transferred before the crash happened, and I hadn't backed up for a long long long time  Crying or Very sad

A copy of BestSynch2008 will back up only new stuff and will also delete stuff that you have deleted from your hard drive. Don't be put off by the somewhat unsophisticated looking web site, it's fast, simple and unobtrusive.

$38 for the premium version or $15 for the basic.

I back up to external hard drives, currently at just under 400Gigs so I'm looking to get a 1 terabyte drive very soon as I am almost to capacity.

Flickr is a superb set up and well worth the minor aggro of setting up an account. I do also have a photobucket account but it is nothing like or as good as flickr.

you don't want to be using flickr as a backup source though - you're asking for trouble uploading hi-res versions of your pics

no i was looking at flickr for just sharing my picture on the net mainly, i would not use a site to back up pics, I may look into an external hard drive then to back up my pics.

You need to sort out a workflow!

I'd suggest ince you've downloaded the images from your media sticks, write them to DVD/CD/External HDD; so that you always have a reference to the originals.

Secondly, once you've done any editing/tweaking back these up to an external device - DVD/CD/External HDD.

You can pick up some great deals on external FireWire/USB/eSATA drives these days.

not sure if you managed to sort this out yet, although I'd hope so. I would just like to add something.

Nearly a year ago now my hard drive just died. No reason, just packed up. I had three years worth of pics, about 30gig or 6000 images. I was also currently working on two weddings, one my little sisters. Apart from it being upsetting an unbelievably annoying, it's also going to cost me between £200-£1000 to get the hard drive fixed, which I can't afford to do. I can stress enough to all the beginners out there how important it is to back up in some way. A Lacie 500gig external hard drive was £75 on www.dabs.com, but are now probly a lot cheaper. £75 may sound like a lot, but £200-£1000 is a shed load more.
Sorry to go on but it is so important.

There as a rather good quote I heard once about this, ""there are two kinds of people out there with computers, those who've had a crash and those who haven't had one YET."

Dunno if you have spent that cash yet on getting your drive fixed, but as you'll see from the post way up above, I too suffered something similar to you, and lost ~ 11,000 pictures from this year, during a backing up session, due to my PC crashing.  Sad

Thankfully my gf's family are very PC savvy, and even her Dad reformatted my PC unknowing that I hadn't recovered my files..... Sad ,  my brother in law managed to get them ALL back from my screwed drive using a program available to all on the net.

I'm pretty sure you have considered trawling through the likes of google etc, but its just a suggestion if you haven't, and are still facing the thought of going to spent the money to recover files....  Smile

GET BESTSYNC - there is a free version that does a good job of backing up. there are pay for options that give better control, whichever - get a back up program - worth its weight in gold

Thanks for your thoughts Gilly. Unfortunately my Hdisk has something called the click of death. It's beyond a simple save by running a progam, the actual hard drive needs taking apart and rebuilding in a special enviroment. Very annoying.
