BACK BUTTON FOCUSHi all, I was just wondering if any of you use back button focus? I'm trying to figure out if I like it or not? lol! What situations do you feel would benefit using this? BTW if any one else has the 20D can you tell me how to get it off back button focus! I can't figure it out, I have returned all settings to default but it's stuck on back button focus...maybe I'll try removing the battery?
TIA

I have no idea what Back Focus even means, but had a Google and it seems you are not the only one with this problem.

Hi creators, thanks for replying. Let me clarify: back button focus is when you use a button on the back of your camera as the focus button while still using the shutter as the shutter. On the 20D as well as other Canons it is the * buttton. From what I have read sometimes people find it sharper and more accurate to use in certain situations, it does take a bit of getting use to; having to push to seperate buttons instead of one but I find I like the stability in my hands. obviously it is not very popular!
I will call Canon tomorrow and ask them how to return to normal settings.

Thanks for that Eye of the Beholder, not something I have on my D80.
Let us know how you get on, because you can be very sure it'll come up again.

Interesting to find out differences between makes, D200 does not have it either (I don't think) will have to have a look when I get a minute

Have to say not come across Back Button Focus before. Been looking on my 5D and doesn't seem to have it, only thing that sounds similar is Focus Lock.
My only suggestion is - is your Firmware up to date? Think it should be version 2.0.3 if not look HERE for update.
I'll do some research as you have me intrigued now.

Hi all, I have a link that tells a little more about it but it didn't work. You would have had to type in a whole lotta letters!lol! It does work on the D70 so it probably works on the D80 but it may not mention it in the manual..If anyone is interested I can post the link but as I said you'd have to type alot...
It seems some people have changed to back button focus and never looked back, I might be one of them if I can't figure out how to turn it back! Oh yes I must call Canon! ***Oh I just found out you can use it on the 5D.
Thanks guys, talk to you soon!

hmmm, think the Nikon has it, just found this, which refers to the menu selection screen a6
a6 - AF Activation allows the AF system to ignore the shutter button.
In its default position the AF system turns on when you press the shutter.
You would use this setting if you preferred the D200 only focus when you press the dedicated AF button on the back.
Not sure of the D80 has same menu

Yep the 5D does have it and I've used it, but know it by a different name.
'Eye of the Beholder' have a look in the custom functions in the Menu. On the 5D its under the shutter/AE lock button Custom function no.4 and from what I've read its the same on the 20D just set it back to 0.
Hope this helps

Do you mean the little button which moves in all directions, right above back dial? if so its a very handy function, you use it when you want to change the focus point quickly. Push it in the direction you want point selected push down twice and all points selected. Its not used all the time but if you trying to focus on a off centre subject then its quicker than going through the dial trying to find the right focus point. If not sorry. BTW you cant turn it off this is the only function it serves,. you can tell the camera to use the back wheel which does stop it but i find using the back wheel worse than using the front wheel and you have to be careful as you can easily change or knock the wheel changing the point with out knowing.
