The D3 looks very, very nice. Feel free to buy me one any time.

D2Xs still supposedly a better prospect for studio work as it shows much more detail at low iso
If you ever get the chance to have a fiddle with a D2Xs keith, do it - the detail you get out of a shot is nothing shot of mindblowing

Thanks Jon, that's an incredibly valuable piece of information. I am still kicking myself at not getting the D2X when I had the opportunity, but I am hoping that this is the year.

Both the D2Xs an D3 have a similar resolution (~12mp) but the D3 has a larger sensor. This means that the D3's resolution of detail isn't as fine, but noise is reduced
The rumour mill is now whispering about an anticipated announcement later in the year regarding a D3X body which will have all the lovely low noise qualities of the D3 but at a much higher resolution. I'd imagine it'll cost an utter fortune though..

Nice, feel an upgrade coming on John? it won't impress the D3 owners though, thats probably the only thing I've got against Nikon how they've done similar with most of the range (release a .... then a x or s version follows very soon after) hey i know Canon have done similar over the years but Nikon seem to do it more readily, and it kills secondhand values.

tbh I perceive canon updating their mid and top range bodies far more often than nikon. Since the D200 came out we've seen the EOS 20D replaced with the 30D and 40D before the D300 was released (I might do a timeline some time if i'm bored, I anticipate canon and nikon being about as bad as each other )
The D3 is largely aimed at PJs and sportshooters - the market that has not been given a new body since the 4mp D2H/D2Hs. The D3 is not a complete replacement for the D2Xs - it's better in some areas but not all.
Personally, I won't be lusting after a D3 even though it'd prove revolutionary in low light - I paid a lot of money for my D2Xs and I'm going to get my money's worth

I'm going to keep my lust bubbles on the D2Xs anyway, not least because with a bit of luck the price might drop a little, and for me, all else aside, it's a bloody fine camera that I would need a long time to even begin to do justice to. I did try out a lens I was after on a D2Xs body and as it all seemed to work well together asked if they'd throw in the camera body for free. They refused for some inexplicable reason.

I'm not even going to look at the review for the D300, LOL, since I just bought the D200. Ignorance is bliss. <blocking ears, closing eyes, singing lalalalala>
