A hint of something a bit special.Something has just come into my possession which, if I can set it up, should come out an absolute beast of a shot. SO I am whetting your appetites here and now. Watch this space, and if I can't get the shot I want I shall nag you all to death until I do. Mission on!

Ok, sorry about the wind up, this is the best I can come up with right now, I've been farting around with it so much I now have a head ache. So...
(suggestions very welcome) (please)

It's a dead and mummified frog. I noticed the lower jaw and eyes were translucent so I put the red light underneath it to shine out of the eye sockets. This is the shot as taken, all I have done is crop and clarify it a bit. I put a blue top light on it, but it was the eyes and the reflection that caused all the bother.

One thing you might want to consider if you do more shots like these is a "first-surface mirror". The mirroring is on the surface, not behind. So you don't get the double reflection.
I think there are some hellish-looking possibilities here if you tried using an extreme close-up - complete with evil lighting

Well I am glad to have got somewhere towards evil/sinister, more work required though. Thanks for the comments, and for the mirror tip John. I would like to suspend it and not have a reflection at all, but that's going to require some delicate black cotton ties. It's actually on a sheet of glass in the picture above.

If you have a crafts store nearby check to see if they have a paper with a velvet-like surface. It will be a matte back so there are absolutely no reflections. I picked up an 8x11 inch sheet for about $2. Otherwise, consider finding the blackest shirt you can find and slightly underexpose the shot to ensure the background is black. Then use PhotoShop to select the black area and invert the selection. Copy the inverted selected area and paste it into a new layer or image. Then you can increase the EV for the selected area and paste it back into a true black background. Those have been my techniques anyway
Oh - if you use the black velvet paper, be sure to use a lint remover to rid yourself of any dust before taking the photo.

Thanks for that John, minor technical prob. I need to under light it to get the scary eyes.

Cut a hole in the paper beneath the critter
Technical problem understood. I'm sure with some imagination and your PS skills you'll find a way to pull off the perfect shot!!
Too bad we're only 2000 miles apart. This could make for a fun Saturday afternoon project
