Thanks so much for the comments, much appreciated. I always do wallpapers with a certain amount of trepidation because they can take a while to do and I get familiarity immunisation and I get very uncertain about them.

Might be worth experimenting with the barrel of the gun being the focal point and not the eyes...just for something different. I might also suggest you lighting the inside of the hair...as its a little too dark personally.

Hard pushed to choose a favourite in the set on Flickr - well done Keith - lovely to see someone enjoying themselves as much as you and Leah are doing (as well as Mirz and Ami). School Marm? Or she could be the glamorous new replacement for Q - I think thats the old bloke who invents all the gadgets for James Bond.

Now, here's a thing. I am learning a thing or two about people and pics. When someone first gets in front of the camera in the studio, it's often/usually a totally freaky experience. It's been hard to learn to chat to them and get some kind of gab going, but I'm getting there. I try to talk to them and just say it isn't a performance, it's just them being them, and I'll snap a few as I speak because their expressions change all the time, and I try to catch the expressions that look interesting, and as they pop up on the monitor they can see they're looking vaguely human and all that. But the other part is that everyone I have shot so far, despite all their reservations, really, inside, wants to go there, they just need help. So a lot of my chatter is about telling them they look good, encouraging them, and saying when a pose looks good to me. But the big thing is to get shooting, if they are waiting for me to shoot, they're nervous, but once I am shooting it all happening, and it all suddenly gets easier.
For what it's worth, you might like to work on your your daughter by pouring compliments and praise on her, because shyness is (in part) a kind of inverted desire to be seen and not wanting to be shy. If it wasn't and wasn't an issue, she wouldn't be shy. Plus, the big bonus for your daughter is if you can persuade her to go there, it will help her confidence enormously. I am going to look out one of the first pictures I have of Leah, the difference is dramatic to my eyes, and she is certainly brim full of confidence in front of the camera now and I think it shows. _________________
This is amongst the first ever shots I took of Leah, I was starting to get studio stuff together and the shots I got were just experiments. I was clueless, Leah was clueless, and this was the real, raw fumbling stuff. Not the most natural pose ever.

Heres a couple of recent photos of my daughter Stef. Shes the one with dark hair. Sarah the blonde girl is a model. Photos not taken by me it was by one of her friends at Leeds music festival. Not at her best -they come back very dirty and tired from 5 days of partying!!

Can only totally agree with Keiths comments above, I found that I got the more relaxed pose from my daughter when she was not ready, that was when I was not looking through the viewfinder and she was preparing herself for the flash.
I treated myself to a wireless remote for the camera (£10 of ebay), D200 does not have remote wireless or IR, and this is a blessing.
The remote in question is made by Seculine, retails around £59 from what I can find out, at warehouseexpress.
Just hoping that I can find another model soon to practice on, will have to try out some of that still life stuff in the meantime _________________ -----------------------------------------------------
Nice one on the remote Dave, I find it extraordinary that the D200 does not have a remote wireless capability. WTF, as they say.
Flapjack, well of the two girls, your daughter looks the more attractive, but you can see the difference confidence makes in front of the camera, Stef looks a bit shy/coy while Sarah looks perfectly comfortable. So I think you need to hatch a cunning plan to boost her confidence and get shooting. _________________

Yes i know i dont have a studio and theres shadows and its pretty obvious its my living room. This was Stef today trying out fancy dress for her pirate party - she doesnt normally wear all that bling!! And apparently her hair is supposed to be messy because this is the wild pirate look! I think she looks a bit more confident and relaxed on this one.

If anyone has technical wizardy (i only have basic software packages) and they can paint out lightswitches shadows change the background etc or enhance the picture - please feel free to post the results here xx _________________ forget all the photography rules! experiment

Uh, well that was easier than I thought it would be. I thought you might like a bit extra as well, so the basic background job is No1 and the other two are with a dash more.
