Did a studio session with Holly yesterday in Pirate costume. I'm over 6 foot and she is just over 5, so I was shooting squatted right down. We had a great time and I'm happy with some of the shots. What do you think?
Thanks Adam, and for casting your eye over them, I'm getting fairly happy with setting up and such, but, once again, it's always good to get others to give a second opinion.
Background wise, I decided to go the whole hog and get the Manfrotto 314B Background Support Kit, it'll take 3 metre paper, cloth, anything. I am in the process of getting an 8' x 4' sheet of 1/4 ply to go on the floor so that I can have seamless backdrops (at the moment with carpet underneath the paper wouldn't last 2 minutes). I bought a roll of black and one of white paper.
Reason for the pirate theme was Holly spent many years in London living a somewhat alternate life style but with no pictures of herself in her kit. I need the practice and she was happy to come along. One of her other alter egos was a monks outfit, that'll be next. I hope that includes her hair as that was under the bandanna on this one and I want to use back lighting on her. _________________
ok..little advice!! (cos i am such an expert after 3 studio photo shoots!!!)
the background you have is very grey in these shots...
I THINK if you get your model to stand a few paces forward, the lights wont light up the background and you will get a black background instead of dark grey...
Thanks for that Adam, and you are right, it just means I need to clear a bit of space to get the camera back a bit further. I also have a bench along the wall to the right of Holly and so getting the lights in the right place will just need a bit more work. Or...... move or chop the bench. Chop the bench Keith, just chop the thing, it's been pi$$ing me off for ages. _________________
space is always going to be an issue with this sort of thing...chop the bench keith!!!
Sean showed me a cheeky tip in PS to burn a grey background into white if you dont get the lighting right on a white background..
i wonder if you can do the same to a grey background if you dodge it, will it go black?!??!?!?
What I'll do when I get back from Chatsworth is replace the backgrounds. which will be easier I think. I intend most of them to have other backgrounds anyway, of a nautical flavour. _________________
Three is great keith nice job. Having seen your pad, there is plenty of space, just hidden under the shite!!! _________________ The sun cannot set,

Missed these due to being on a course, now I know why the remarks were made about the bench.
Make it into firewood!!!, now - then you'd have the room to get the images spot on - not that they are that far off anyway - just the background slightly, but you fixed that in the last one _________________ -----------------------------------------------------
Thank you all for the encouragement my friends, the bench has been chopped, turned and put against the back wall, I bought a USB extension lead today so I have three metres to play with from laptop to camera, same for hot shoe. I've put in a 1/2" ply base so the backdrop can come right out. If you spot anything I've missed or have any suggestions I'd appreciate your thoughts.
